Planetary Ball Mills – Description & Advantages

The LAARMANN® Planetary Ball Mills are used for fine grinding of soft, hard, brittle, or fibrous materials. Both dry and wet grinding options are supported, making them ideal for daily sample preparation in laboratories and development environments.

Working Principle

LAARMANN® Planetary Ball Mills consist of several cylindrical grinding jars mounted on a sun wheel. These jars are filled with grinding balls and rotate around their own axis as well as around the central sun wheel—similar to a planetary system.

This dual movement generates strong centrifugal and Coriolis forces, resulting in an intense grinding effect between the balls and the sample material. Depending on the speed ratio, various movement patterns are achieved, including impact and rolling, enabling fine and efficient milling.

Advantages

LAARMANN® Planetary Ball Mills are designed for user-friendly operation with programmable settings for speed, rotation reversal, and grinding time. The integrated safety system ensures the machine only runs when securely closed and immediately stops if opened during operation.

Grinding Jars – Materials Available

  • Stainless steel
  • Hardened steel
  • Tungsten carbide
  • Agate
  • Sintered corundum
  • Zirconium oxide
  • PU-coated
  • PTFE-coated
  • Others on request

Features of Grinding Jars

  • Constructed from a single block or with stainless steel protective jacket and inner liner
  • Safety ensured through protective jacket design
  • Easy to open due to optimized gap between lid and jar
  • Self-centering base for precise alignment
  • Dust-proof sealing using O-ring or other sealing mechanisms

The correct selection of grinding jar material and the appropriate filling level are crucial for achieving optimal grinding results. Based on your application, select the right jar material and suitable amount of grinding balls.

For best results, the jar should be filled approximately one-third with sample material, one-third with grinding balls, and the remaining third left empty to allow movement of the balls during milling.
